While The Complete Bentley, the other book we’ve introduced in this section, is a chronicle of Bentley's 90-year history, Bentley MkVI is a book for the enthusiast. It’s devoted entirely to the Mark VI, the originator of the post-war Bentley.
The first completely new model built by Rolls-Royce after World War II, the Mark VI made its debut in the spring of 1946 and was the first ever R-R/Bentley saloon to be given an all-steel standard body. Far more accessible than the pre-war Derby Bentleys, the Mark VI was a huge commercial success. At the same time, however, a variety of bespoke coachbuilt-bodied models were crafted in the old Bentley tradition, and are still popular amongst enthusiasts in the 21st century.
The book covers the Bentley Mark VI and its ‘big minor-change’ version, the R-Type, as well as the R-Type Continental, a brilliant milestone in Bentley history. It also covers the S-Type, the successor to the Mark VI/R-Type, and the Mark VI's sister model, the Silver Dawn, which was built under the R-R brand. It highlights the true nature and appeal of each model at a time when Bentley’s post-war star shone brightest. The content is extensive, including a history, introductions to each generation's standard models, bespoke body models, and a buyer's and restorer's guide, all of which showcase a formidable attention to detail.
The author, Martyn Nutland, a motoring journalist for more than 40 years, is an avid Bentley enthusiast and was long time editor-in-chief of the Bentley Drivers' Club, the most prestigious Bentley club newsletter. The force and energy he has exerted in creating this book goes beyond the work of a mere historian. It's an achievement that showcases the depth of the Bentley brand in all its glory.
